Hotel Monte Sano plate: My grandmother, of Arab, AL, and originally Huntsville died recently and one of the items she left me was a Monte Sano Hotel dinner platter with the Hotel's logo printed in red on the rim. As a kid growing up in Huntsville we used to go to the park and wander around the ruins of the Monte Sano. I wanted to know if there was anyone that I coul contact regarding this platter. I do not want to get rid of it as my grandparents had it for decades andd its sentimental value is far more than its monetary, just curious is all.  See platerthompson at bwmusiccityinn dot com 1/29

Scam Alert: This eve, Nov 20, about 6pm two men came to my door. One said they were from Oakwood College and selling books to "raise money for a scholarship." People during holidays may be more vulnerable to scams. Take care.

Hope Everyone is Aware of the Regions Bank scam as well: Mary Lou writes - I just talked to my bank: Regions. There is a scam going around on the phone. I got a message on my answering machine about my transfer service from Regions being out of date. I had gotten another email about it and then they left this web site on my work phone: www.regionscare.com
The bank said that it is a scam. They have been getting calls from all over about this problem. Don't open that email or call them back. The banker says that if you do give them sensitive information Regions would help you straighten it out, but it takes 600 working hours to do so. (This information is also in today's paper - 11/21)

NEIGHBORS BEWARE Another story from 2 years back: A young man tried to sell me magazines about 2 years ago. His name was Brooks, but I don't remember his last name. He said his mom was a veterinarian. There was a magazine sales "contest" -- the girls were beating the boys so far. The prize was a trip to Cancun. He claimed he was selling for "Huntsville." I asked if it was HHS, and he was indirect and mumbled something without answering the question. The company he was representing is Universal Subscription Agency (USA), Las Vegas, NV. Google it; you'll see nothing but complaints and repeats of the same script all over the country. Another pair of young men (don' t know if Brooks was one of them. I don't know that I would recognize him) showed up about a year ago with the same song & dance; I stated that it was a scam, they shrugged and said "Okay." and walked away. --Kelley Johns 10/29

And Another:
Hi, Just came across your site. My wife and I just moved to Huntsville at the beginning of October. We live at the bottom of the mountain on Holling Drive off of Hwy. 72. One thing caught my eye on your site. The door to door solicitation business. Two young men came to my door yesterday selling magazines. The guy smelled like he had a bit of alcohol on his breath (it was 11am). He said he and his friend attended UAH and had to sell magazines. He said he lived on Albany street, which is adjacent to mine. He said that he was selling magazines for his school and that some magazines would be sent overseas to Iraq and some children's magazines to children's hospitals, etc. I told him if he gave me his address, I could stop by later to discuss it. He refused and said he could come back by. So I asked him for a phone number I could call him at. He gave me a number for Arizona. After that, he and his friend went to the neighbors house and continued down the way. I did not call the police as I didn't see anything overtly illegal, but I wanted to let you know so that you might add this info to your "door-to-door" warning on the front page. Many thanks.

DOOR TO DOOR ALERT Thursday, at 3:50 p.m., 10/24/07, a nice-looking young man, about 17 or 18, came to my door soliciting money for a trip to England.  He said his father gave him half of the money, but he needs to earn the rest, yet, he was seeking "donations" for any work I might have.  He said his name was Brooks Clinton and that he lives on Highland Avenue.  I told him I would need to send him some money after this weekend, and that he should write down his address for me.  His demeanor completely changed and said he needed to collect the money now, and that his mother did not like to give out their address.  I told him that I needed to have it if he wanted me to donate money.  He became upset and asked if I was trying to harass him.  He became belligerent.  I ordered him off my property.  He took out his cell phone and wandered down to the corner of Panorama and Hutchens, sat down on the wet grass and smoked a cigarette while continuing to talk on the phone.  I called the police and reported him.  After a couple of minutes, he got up and wandered up Panorama away from my house.  I looked up "Clinton" on Highland and found no one by that name in our mountain directory on Highland.  He was wearing a dark-blue windbreaker with hood and ragged, light-blue blue jeans. Note: Another neighbor reported this young man came to sell her magazines on the same day and thought it was a scam. 10/24

Our neighbor Heather English who lives on Crescent also had some things taken from her car. Has anyone alerted the police or community watch about this? Sounds like we need some nightly patrols up here for awhile.

Break Ins on Monte Sano (Panorama Area)
From: Mark Blevins (Panorama Resident), pop.theory at gmail.com
My name is Mark Blevins and my wife and I just moved up on the mountain- 5224 Panorama. Last night my car was broken into and my car radio was stolen. Whoever did break into my car was not the most cunning of car thieves, as the faceplate to my radio was left in my car. If they were after a $450 paperweight, I hope it finds them in good stead. Nonetheless, be aware that there was a break in and secure your belongings. Especially until fall break is over.
Thank You,-mark blevins

Bikes that were apparently picked up  and then abandoned have been seen at the Belcrest Apartments and near 2919 Thompson Circle.  If you are missing a bike, be sure and look at these. 10/17

The Boy & Cub scouts are still collecting aluminum cans as a fund raiser for the Halls. They can be place in the white fenced in area at the back of the parking lot (next to the basketball goal) of Monte Sano United Methodist Church. Joe Dombrowski says "If you need someone to pick them up, please email me your phone number and I will call and come by at your convenience." That address isjospdombro@knology.net
