Monte Sano United Methodist Church
Light on the Mountain 2011 Calendar
Invitation to Photographers
“And God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good…” Thus from the beginning of history, light has been a defining, positive force associated with goodness, truth, understanding, leadership, beauty, art, illumination, security, beginnings and knowledge. Jesus, referring to himself, said, “I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” The guiding spirit or divine presence in each of us is often referred to as the light. Indeed in the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said of his followers, “You are the light of the world…Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
High above the city, Monte Sano Mountain is perhaps the first place in Huntsville where one can discern in the East the first light of the dawning of a new day and see the last rays of light fade into the Western horizon at night. In between these two events, the light of day shows many facets of its character from strong shafts piercing storm clouds to gentle luminescence of fog, from bright noontimes to faint dusks, from rainbows to reflections in a waterfall or a dewdrop, each according to the time and season. After the sunset, however, all is not darkness. Light from the moon and faraway stars and planets have guided people throughout history and given reassurance that darkness is not permanent. Today our darkness is pierced and sometimes drowned by artificial light. Looking into the valley below, Monte Sano at night is adorned with a jeweled necklace and looking up from the city she seems crowned with a diamond tiara of lights.
We invite you to open your eyes―and your camera―anew to the many manifestations of light and its effect on Monte Sano. Monte Sano United Methodist Church plans to publish a 2011 calendar with sales proceeds going to the Building Fund. The theme of the calendar is Light on the Mountain. All photographers, amateur or professional, are invited to submit photos on this theme for possible inclusion.
