Dear Monte Sano Community,
At Monte Sano Elementary we are excited about our new Lego Mindstorms Robotics program! We have selected a team of 4th and 5th grade students, received our materials, and are now in search of a mentor. We are seeking a community volunteer to mentor students who will be writing the computer programs that will run the robots. If you are available and interested, please contact the robotics coach, Ashley Herron, at aLherron@hsv.k12.al.us or (256) 428-7300.
Looking for Dark Room Supplies I know several folks used to have a darkroom up here...if you know of anyone...could you please have them call or email Leela? (ASAP please) Leeladevere@gmail.com (256) 489-6900.
Also on my wishlist is: a safelight, sink, and paper...even old paper is still interesting to 'play with'. Thank-you, Leela

Monte Sano Elementary School is participating again this year in a bottle cap recycling contest sponsored by the City of Huntsville's Operation Green Team. The school will be collecting caps from October 1, 2011 through March 31, 2012. The school that collects the most caps is awarded $1,000.00 and all participating schools will have a chance to win a field trip to see Steve Trash's Eco Hero performance. Everyone in the community can help by collecting their caps and dropping them off at Monte Sano Elementary School. So instead of the plastic caps going into our landfill they will be recycled by KW Plastics in Troy, AL, and made into plastic paint containers!
*Caps must be plastic, twist on type with no metal. Examples are caps from plastic bottles of juice, milk, ketchup, laundry detergent, water, soda, peanut butter and shampoo, etc...
. (Caps cannot be put in your blue recycle bin.)

Deer Hunting with Spot Lights
Dear Mountain Neighbors,
This is Lynne Smith, I live on Mae Drive. I wanted to share this info with you all, and please share with everyone you know.
As you know the deer have increased in population this year, the game warden says the construction in the valley is moving them up the
mountain.
I noticed a doe missing for the past week, her fawns have been alone (on the Ashburn's property behind my house). I was out at 3am Thursday morning, (cause my dog ate the cat food and he had tummy issues, and now I am glad about all of that), I went to the back of my yard with my dog, at which time a rather loud, gas powered white pick up truck pulled up on the sidewalk at the Ashburn's property, they began to shine a spotlight all across the lot. I ran inside to get my flashlight. When I returned they were shining their spotlight down the other side of the
road. I flashed my light at them and they left.I contacted the Game Warden on Thursday and had a return call from Office Joe Lindsay, Game Warden , on Friday. He asked that we keep track of the dates and times we see anyone up here spotlighting our deer. He thinks that they are after the really large Buck that walks the Blvd at night. Anyone out at 3-4am using a spotlight is not out here to look at our beautiful wildlife, they are up here to kill.
I am extremely afraid that they have killed the missing doe, from the back of my yard. The Game Warden did reassure me that other does will take care of and even nurse the fawns from does that have been killed. He said the best thing we humans can do is let the deer tend to their own young. But, we can band together and stop these deer hunters from roaming our mountain at night.
These were most likely construction workers or lawn care crews that are seeing signs of deer during the day and coming back up here at night. Please keep track of any suspicious activity, the times, dates and vehicles, and if they shoot a weapon...call 911!
In love, light & peace!
Lynne
Watch for deer on top of Monte Sano There is a small group of deer living in the Nolen/Old Chimney/Monte Sano Blvd area. At least 3 does and 2 fawns are regularly seen there. See pictures By Carol Blair at Photo Gallery link, Monte Sano Wildlife.
Herbicides on Bankhead Parkway
I have an appointment with Joy Mckee of Huntsville Landscape Management to discuss the use of herbicides on Bankhead Parkway and Fern Street.
Her contact information is:

Another issue is the recent use of herbicides on Monte Sano Blvd from Governor's Drive to Panorama. I have had positive and constructive conversations with Jeff Jordan who is responsible for the spraying and Bill Yell who is the PR person for Huntsville Utilities. I was told that they will make changes in the management of the plants under the power lines to be more selective in the application of the herbicides, the timing of the applications and try not to destroy the wildflowers.
Jeff's contact information is:
phone 256-535-1321
Please contact the above persons to express your concerns about this.

To the parents of the children that keep knocking on doors at night and running away near the west side of Panorama: Please ask them to stop. It was funny when we did it long ago. However now that we have small children that are trying to sleep, its not.
