Website History
The website montesano.org was created in 1997 through the efforts of Monte Sano residents Delia Siegrist, owner, creator, and webmaster and Marian Satterfield, designer and assistant webmaster as a service to the Monte Sano community. Our idea was to create a website that would nourish the concept of community, provide a forum for a free exchange of opinions and ideas on topics of interest to the community, provide links to other mountain related sites and services, provide a directory of emails for residents wishing to participate, and be a service in whatever way possible to the residents of Monte Sano. As part of this effort, the Monte Sano Elementary School website was also developed and maintained for several years before the Huntsville City School system took over the hosting of the site.
In the early years, one of the primary services that the website provided was a forum for interested parties to air their ideas and opinions about the question of sewer service on the mountain. When it was decided that sewer service would be installed on the mountain, the website then served to keep the community informed of the progress of the work being done, the equipment being used and the schedules and timelines being set by the city. Other issues that have been addressed are the rebuilding of the closed road into Monte Sano State Park and the development of High Mountain Road. Web published opinions of the residents have been considered by the city and the city has also used the site to publish information for the benefit of mountain residents.
In 2003, the Monte Sano Civic Association and the Monte Sano Club graciously agreed to finance the expenses of hosting the website and email service. In 2004, the directory of resident email addresses became a mailing list for an e-mail newsletter for quick notifications to the community regarding things like upcoming yard sales, lost pets, death announcements, reminders of community meetings, etc.
In 2006, recognizing the need for a new, fresh, professional look, Marian Satterfield almost single-handedly redesigned the website adding new features and incorporating the old. The new site went online in July. Additional services the new site included were a pet registry to keep pictures of mountain pets in the event one was lost, a history section to archive mountain history and pictures, and a calendar link.
In 2010, the website was modified again to simplify its upkeep by converting the opening page of the website to an Apple format. The pet album was dropped and special upcoming dates of interest were added to the opening page and the history album was included with other albums of mountain interest.
In 2011, a new section, Life, was added and Monte Sano real estate was included on this page in addition to various new links to pages of interest to residents. A new page was also developed for the newly established Monte Sano Community Garden. The Little Green Store agreed to share in the financing of the expenses of hosting the website and supporting the email newsletter expenses.
At present, all web and email upkeep is done by the webmaster with residents sending information for inclusion to web@montesano.org. Residents are encouraged to send pictures, links, essays or opinions, news items, contributions to our history, dates of events for the calendar or anything else that impacts Monte Sano residents. There is never any charge to residents for this service and it is our hope that we will all benefit from its existence.
It is our goal to keep the website free of unwanted advertising and clean in spirit and language. Residents are encouraged to email web@montesano.org with comments, suggestions or requests for postings.
